Interests and Activities of the Mechner Foundation

The Mechner Foundation:

1.  Publishes and conducts basic experimental research in psychology. Current research programs focus on:

  a.  Behavioral resurgence in skilled performance. The behavior consists of "revealed operant" types of key pressing sequences executed on a computer keyboard.

  b.  How the presentation of a presumed reinforcer actually affects the behavior stream on which the reinforcement impinges.

2.  Publishes Mechner's writings on his theory and technology for learning and practicing skilled performance. The term skilled performance subsumes musical performance skills, all types of athletic skills, martial arts, dance, language skills, playing games like chess or go, drawing, etc. One of the goals of this technology is to make high levels of achievement more accessible, and more efficiently attainable, through improved methods of learning and  practicing.

3.  Supports research and publishes writings on applications of the "revealed operant" technique. It provides interested researchers with software for designing and programming revealed operant experiments, the required computer equipment, and other forms of support for research that uses the revealed operant technique to advantage.

4.  Publishes writings on the Mechner notation system for behavioral contingencies, and applications of that notation in diverse fields of behavioral science, including behavior analysis, social interaction, micro-economics, and law.

5.  Supports work on Mechner's "Power Measure" for assessing knowledge-based skills, including chess playing and Go playing skills.

6.  Supports research in the field of artificial intelligence, as applied to computer-based Go playing software.

7.  Is engaged in a search for paintings by the formerly prominent but nearly forgotten Russian-born painter Solomon Lerner. The goal is to assemble a number of his best paintings for an exhibit that may restore his work to deserved prominence. Hundreds of his works are now scattered throughout the world, mainly in Israel, Cuba, France, and the United States.

8.  Seeks to explore the scientific frontiers and societal implications of current advances in molecular biology and genetics, with a view to illuminating their potential future impact.
